Disney California Adventure Park, FAQs

What other Disney park is similar to Disney California Adventure Park?

Disney California Adventure Park in Anaheim California is a total original. There is no other parks like it. Yes, a few of its rides, like Soarin,’ appear in other Disney theme parks, and Hollywood Land has similarities to Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Florida. Still, the park itself is unique, and we think worth a visit.

Why would I want to visit a park that is just about California?

First, a quick disclaimer. I love California, so I do bring that perspective to this FAQ, but I am going to try to answer this in a universal way…

Disney California Adventure Park was conceived as a tribute to its home state of California with different lands echoing notable regions and features of the Golden State. The park opened in 2001, but was not a hit with guests.

From 2007 to 2012, the park received a major overhaul, and while the original name and the basic outline of the concept remained, the park itself was almost brand new. Disney learned and adapted and created a new and better park with the best of the original ideas plus more. You do not have to love California to appreciate Disney California Adventure Park.

Cars Land in Disney California Adventure Park is so enthralling that Walt Disney World is draining their Rivers of America in the center of Magic Kingdom to try to capture some of that magic. You could argue that the “Mother Road” has an endpoint in California—it does—but Radiator Springs owes much more to the environs of Monument Valley than Santa Monica. Avengers Campus really does not have much to do with the original Golden State theme, but it provides a home to a very popular Disney franchise. There’s something for everyone at the park, and the California theme has really become more of a name than anything else.

If the attractions, entertainment and Disney Imagineering appeal to you, give the park a chance.

The main entrance for Disney California Adventure Park is on the south side of the Disneyland Resort Esplanade. This is the entrance most guests will use to enter the park.

There is secondary entrance that links the Grizzly Peak portion of the park to the lobby of Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel and Spa. At the time of writing, this entrance is accessible to registered guests of the Disneyland Resort Hotels. For both entrances, all guests will first need to pass through a security checkpoint.

In the past, Disneyland Resort Hotel guests have also been able to use a third entrance. This entrance was in the Paradise Gardens Park land. Hotel guests could reach it by using their keycards to access a gated pathway off Disneyland Drive. This entrance is not currently open for any guests.

Whatever the official park opening and closing times happen to be during your visit, you should know that you can actually be in the parks before and after these times! Disneyland Resort opening and closing procedures allow guests with valid general admission to enter Disney California Adventure Park before its official opening time and stay after closing. Why is World of Color happening after Disney California Adventure Park closes?

World of Color is the signature nighttime spectacular at Disney California Adventure Park, and we think it is the perfect way to end a day at that theme park.

One quirk of this show is that it is often scheduled to begin at official park closing time. Don’t worry, you can still see the show with your general admission ticket (or Magic Key).

At official park closing time, cast members will close park entrance turnstiles and the queues for park attractions. Anyone who is in line for an attraction before closing may experience it, but no new guests will be allowed in. Some park shops and dining locations remain open after closing and guests are allowed to stay and enjoy the evening ambiance.

Guests who are in the park may also enjoy the World of Color show even though it begins right at park closing time. It will run as usual, and after it ends, guests can leisurely exit the park. It’s a nice way to end the day.

Disney California Adventure Park looks like it is closing really early: what is going on with that?

Disney California Adventure Park hosts the very popular Oogie Boogie Bash—A Disney Halloween Party on select evenings during the summer and fall. The park closes earlier than usual on these nights in order to accommodate this “after hours party.”

These Oogie Boogie party dates change every year, but in recent years they have begun in mid-August and continued through Halloween. Currently there are over thirty parties scheduled for this time span. Oogie Boogie is a separately ticket event not included in general admission, and you will not be able to stay for the party unless you have a ticket for that particular party. You can read about “hard ticket events” like Oogie Boogie Bash and how the evening transition works here.

Similarly, Disney California Adventure Park hosts Grad Nights for graduating high school seniors. However, the park does not close as early for these nights as it does for Oogie Boogie Bash.

If you are visiting Disneyland Resort with a one park per day ticket on one of these early closing days, you may wish to make your park reservation for Disneyland Park: you will get more hours for your ticket. But if you have a Park Hopper, we suggest starting your day in Disney California Adventure Park and switching to Disneyland Park later in the evening. You will probably find that the daytime crowds in Disney California Adventure Park are lighter on party days!
