Nighttime Spectaculars are shows that take place after dark at Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park. These shows typically take advantage of their dark setting by featuring fireworks, projections, pyrotechnics and other light effects. These effects are set to music and usually a narrative. Popular examples of these shows include World of Color at Disney California Adventure Park, and at Disneyland Park there is Fantasmic! and the many varieties of firework shows (Fantasy in the Sky, Disneyland Forever, Wondrous Journeys). Particular holiday seasons or festivals usually feature special versions of these nighttime spectaculars.

Nighttime Spectaculars at Disneyland Resort, FAQs
“Nighttime spectacular” is the general name for an elaborate show that happens at Disneyland Resort after dark. These shows change by season and by year, but with the following FAQs, we will attempt to give you an overview of how they work.
What are some examples of nighttime spectaculars at Disneyland Resort?
A nighttime spectacular is any kind of large-scale, multi-faceted, after-dark presentation at Disneyland Resort. These nighttime spectaculars offer guests a grand finale to a fun day in the parks, and they often take advantage of the dark to use elements like projections, fireworks and pyrotechnics to put on a huge show. Their large scale makes them visible and audible to many guests spread out over large areas.
In Disneyland Park
Probably the most well known kinds of nighttime spectaculars at Disneyland are the fireworks shows over Sleeping Beauty Castle. On nights when this is happening, Disneyland Park usually combines fireworks with pyrotechnics and projections on both Sleeping Beauty Castle and other buildings like storefronts on Main Street U.S.A. or the facade of “it’s a small world.” To really create an immersive show, Disneyland Park uses speakers in the park to add voice narration and a musical soundtrack often mixed with dialogue from Disney films. Some shows have even included character appearances in the skies above the park!
On weekdays in the “off-season” or on nights when Disney has determined fireworks would pose a hazard, you may get a Disneyland nighttime spectacular using these other elements without the fireworks.
While fireworks exploding above Sleeping Beauty Castle are a classic Disneyland image, the other evening spectacular at Disneyland Park is no less impressive. Fantasmic! takes place on the Rivers of America and includes floating stages, projections on mist screens, pyrotechnics and character appearances plus music and narration.
Mickey is the star here, and this show has everything. One of the most significant elements of this show are the wonderful live performances, which include a pirate battle in the rigging of the Sailing Ship Columbia!

In Disney California Adventure Park
Over at Disney California Adventure Park, the signature evening show is World of Color. This takes place on the large central body of water and features projections on mist screens, laser lights, pyrotechnics, fog, fountains, music, narration and lots of lights. This show has been built around different themes and stories over the years, but there is almost always some version of World of Color running in the evenings at Disney California Adventure Park.
Both parks also have some nighttime shows that kind of supplement these larger spectaculars. For example, there have been projection shows on Carthay Circle and World of Color pre-shows at Disney California Adventure Park. Over at Disneyland Park, the fireworks are sometimes complimented by Star Wars themed projections and music in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. “it’s a small world” also provides the backdrop for some really charming projections.
Finally, we recently saw the return of the Paint the Night parade at Disneyland Park. For this popular parade, Disney covers floats (and performers!) with lights and “paints the night” with them. Most Disney parades take place during the daytime, but Paint the Night continues the tradition of another incredibly popular nighttime parade from the past: the Main Street Electrical Light Parade.
The nighttime spectacular is scheduled for after park closing! What is the deal with that?
This sometimes happens and it is not a typo. Disneyland Resort will schedule a nighttime spectacular to begin just before or even at park closing time. As I write this, I am looking at the schedule for Disney California Adventure Park and seeing that park closing time for today is 9:00pm and the performance time for World of Color is also 9:00pm. That is just for the day I am writing this post, but that is not at all uncommon with World of Color. Disneyland Resost will frequently schedule the second, or sometimes only, performance of World of Color for right at Disney California Adventure Park’s closing time.
Do not worry you can still watch the nighttime spectacular from inside the park! The normal procedure for closing time at Disneyland Resort theme parks is that cast members close the attraction queues at official park closing time. If you are in the queue before the park closes, you can still ride your chosen attraction. And if you are in the park, you can still view the nighttime spectacular! (Just do not expect to board any rides after the show is over.) You can read all about Disneyland Resort park closing procedures here: When Does Disneyland Close?
Now, if the nighttime spectacular is part of a special separately ticketed event at Disneyland Park or Disney California Adventure, that entertainment is not included in your general admission. You can learn about after hours parties here: Hard Ticket Event, Disneyland 101 Glossary
What is the best way to avoid big crowds for evening entertainment at Disneyland Resort?
How do you avoid crowds at Disneyland Resort nighttime spectaculars? This is a tricky question. Generally, the best way to avoid crowds at Disneyland Resort is to go during low-crowd times, like when schools in the United States are usually in session. However, Disneyland Resort also tends to scale back entertainment offerings during low-crowd times. So, you might miss certain entertainment altogether or find out that there are fewer showing during your low-crowd trip.
We suggest checking the Disneyland entertainment schedule for your intended dates. Make sure the nighttime spectacular you wish to see is on the schedule for your visit. You may find that you can adjust your plan a bit and catch the show. For example, during the “off-season,” Disneyland typically only shows fireworks on weekend nights. If you are deciding which day of the week to visit which Disneyland Resort park, be sure to check the entertainment schedule.
If you are visiting Disneyland Resort during a busier time, chances are better that the nighttime spectacular you want to see is not only showing but is showing twice a night! When this is the case, the second showing is almost always more sparsely attended than the first. If you can stay up late enough, you should be able to enjoy lighter crowds.
Also keep in mind that Disneyland Resort has many devoted locals with Magic Keys. These folks are able to easily pop-into the parks for the evening, and they love novel offerings. If a new nighttime spectacular is debuting during your visit to Disneylnad Resort, expect those shows to be crowded even if the parks are not too busy during the day. Furthermore, expect those locals to be “camped-out” and reserving spots early!
Priority Viewing Areas
If you are interested in priority seating for a nighttime spectacular at Disneyland Resort, consider a dining package or tour. These extra-cost offerings often come with reserved seating for shows and parades. Check the description for the tour or dining package. And be aware that in some packages offer truly reserved seating while in other cases you simply get access to a more preferable viewing area. Read the description for the package or tour you are purchasing. In many cases, you will still need to arrive well before the show begins in order to secure a favorable viewing location.
Finally, there is one free way to get access to a reserved priority viewing area for a nighttime spectacular at Disneyland Resort. Disney California Adventure Park uses the virtual queue system to offer access to a priority viewing location for World of Color. You can join the virtual queue for free (as long as you have valid admission to Disney California Adventure Park). We walk you through the steps to joining here: Disneyland Virtual Queue Guide.
Just keep in mind that many guests will also gain access to this priority viewing area. As with the standard viewing areas for World of Color, some spots are better than others. Your virtual queue reservation will tell you when you will be able to access the viewing area to choose your particular spot.

Are there any nighttime spectaculars outside of the theme parks?
Not really. Disneyland Resort nighttime spectaculars are usually just happening in the theme parks. However, you can get a peek at them from outside of the parks.
For example, some Pixar Place Hotel rooms have good views of World of Color in Disney California Adventure Park, and you can even get the synced soundtrack through your in-room television! At the same hotel, you can catch Disneyland Park fireworks from the recreation deck, and this time with the soundtrack coming through the speakers there.
In fact, many hotels around Disneyland Resort—both those on and off property—have some kind of view of the Disneyland Park fireworks. Even if your hotel does not, you can try catching the show from the Esplanade. We have tips for enjoying Disneyland Resort without tickets here: Terrific Ways to Have Fun at Disneyland Without a Ticket.
Because of their height, fireworks are the easiest entertainment to enjoy from outside of the parks, but some hotels can give you a peek of World of Color. We already mentioned Pixar Place Hotel, but Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel and Spa is also in a good location, and some other hotels, like the Westin, may provide a glimpse depending on your location.
Do I have to buy a special ticket to see a nighttime spectacular?
Most nighttime spectaculars at Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park are included with your general admission. For nighttime spectaculars presented during regular park operating hours (or right at park closing time), you just need a Magic Key or a ticket to the host park plus a park reservation.
On some nights, the parks at Disneyland Resort host special after hours parties like Oogie Boogie Bash or Star Wars Nite. Some of these separately ticketed events have their own evening entertainment. When this is the case, the entertainment is part of the party tickets for those events.
Finally, some nighttime spectaculars at Disneyland Resort offer special dining packages. With these dining packages, you pay a set price for a meal and get both food and reserved seating for a particular show or parade. The reserved seating might be the same as the seating for your meal, or you might get a pass for a designated area that you will access later. These dining packages offer you prefer seating for popular entertainment at Disneyland Resort, but they are not required. Similarly, some paid tours include show seating. You can view the shows without a dining package or tour.
