A cavalcade at Disneyland Resort is like a mini-parade. Characters and other performers move through a park on foot, in vehicles or on small floats. Cavalcades are shorter and less elaborate than the full parades at Disneyland Resort or Disney California Adventure Park. They are a great way to spot characters and wave a greeting. Often cavalcades are themed to a particular season or celebration, and they may feature characters you do not frequently see around Disneyland Resort. Here are some answers to frequently asked questions about cavalcades at Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park.
What is the difference between a cavalcade and a parade at Disneyland?
A cavalcade is basically a smaller version of a Disney parade. They tend to focus on characters, usually walking or on vehicles, rather than huge floats or choreographed dance sequences.
The thing is, a cavalcade at Disneyland Resort is still pretty exciting. Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park parades are so fantastic that even a lesser version of them is still spectacular, and the cavalcades are still more elaborate than your typical hometown parade.
How do I know when there is a cavalcade at Disneyland Resort?
Cavalcades at Disneyland Resort are seasonal. Often they are tied to limited-time celebrations like Lunar New Year or Disneyland Resort’s 70th Celebration. If your visit (or potential visit) is months away, you can check-out upcoming events at Disneyland Resort to see if they include a cavalcade. Disney Parks Blog is a good place to watch for announcements about upcoming events. You can also explore the special events page here. If your visit is still months out, you may not be able to determine specific times for any cavalcades or other entertainment, but you can get a rough idea.
If your visit is less than six weeks out, you can determine whether a cavalcade is happening during your visit by checking the Disneyland Resort hours and entertainment calendar on the Disneyland website. Disneyland posts dates and times about six weeks out, so you should be able to also figure out exactly when a cavalcade (or parade, or nighttime spectacular, etc) is happening each day.
Finally, when you are visiting Disneyland Resort, you can reference the Disneyland app. Select the “Entertainment” tab from the map screen or “Wait Times & Showtimes” from the menu screen. These options should show you entertainment for the day, including cavalcades.
Where are the cavalcades at Disneyland Resort?
The cavalcades follow the same routes as the parades in Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park.
With all of the construction happening around the resort right now, we would not be at all surprised if these routes change.
At the time of writing, the Disneyland Park parade route runs up Main Street, U.S.A., around the east side of Sleeping Beauty Castle and onward to “it’s a small world.” This route runs northward or southward depending upon the time of day.
For Disney California Adventure Park, the route has gone from Paradise Gardens Park, through what is actually called the “Performance Corridor,” then on through Hollywood Land to the Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! Again this route runs in either direction depending on the time of day. A lot of changes are scheduled for Disney California Adventure Park at either end of the route, so we will be interested to see if the route alters a bit.
Are cavalcades the only way to see characters at Disneyland Resort?
Cavalcades are a great way to see characters at Disneyland Resort, but they are not the only way.
Just as you can check the Disneyland app for the cavalcade schedule, you can look at the app for character meet and greet schedules. On the map screen for the app, select the “Characters” tab. This will show you the times and locations for meeting specific characters. For most of these meet and greets, you will line-up at the specified locations and take your turn for a brief interaction and perhaps some photos.
Many of these meet and greets happen out in the open where even those guests not in line can get a peek at the characters from afar. Some happen indoors in themed environments. The most elaborately themed and structured of these meet and greets occur at Mickey and Minnie’s houses in Mickey’s Toontown and at Royal Hall near Sleeping Beauty Castle in Fantasyland. At Disney California Adventure Park, Frozen characters are usually greeting guests inside a special area inside the Animation Building.
At other times, characters will make spontaneous appearances. These do not show-up in the schedule or on the app. Instead, you might spot characters wandering about or engaging in little games like musical chairs. You could see Captain Hook ambling through Fantasyland or Grogu and The Mandalorian traversing Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. Typically, these unscheduled characters appearances do not include formal lines and meet and greets. Rather, you can wave to the characters in passing, or they may stop for brief interactions of their choosing. The characters you see will “belong in” the land in some way or another.
Finally, you can regularly spot characters in parades, dance parties and shows. Again, you can check the entertainment schedule for these offerings.
