Happy October everyone! Today, we are sharing ideas and quick links for easy DIY costumes themed to Disney and Pixar films. All of these costumes are quick to put together and super comfortable. We know comfort is important if you are headed to Disneyland Resort’s Oogie Boogie Bash – A Disney Halloween Party or Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party at Walt Disney World. Really, comfort is important for school parades, neighborhood parties, and trick-or-treating as well! That is why we are sharing ideas here that will work for kids and grown-ups.
When we think of easy Disney costumes, we think of outfits that are primarily made up of regular everyday clothing. This makes it easy to sit down on a Disney ride or in class, and it also means we can get extra uses out of the clothing after Halloween. Plus, these outfits are soft and breathable rather than the ready-made nylon ensembles you are likely to find at the store.

Monsters University Student Costume
We love the movies from the Monsters Inc franchise! (You can find our movie guides for both films here: Monsters, Inc. Movie Night Discussion, Snack & Activity Guide and Monsters University Movie Night, A Disney Sunday Movie Guide.)
We also think monsters make great Halloween costumes, because you can get creative and decide how you would look as a monster. Monstropolis is full of creatures of every color shape and size, so you can grab some hairspray and make-up and get silly.
For an instantly recognizable and easy Disney spin on your monster costume, just add a recognizable hat or tee from the one and only Monsters University. Pull on a classic Monsters University tee like this one or join Mike and Sully’s fraternity brothers in Oozma Kappa by wearing this tee. You can also go for a copy of Mike’s beloved cap here.

Prefer a DIY approach? The photo above shows our own take on a Monsters University costume.
We created a cozy (and silly) winter hat out of fleece scraps and then used our Cricut cutting machine and heat press to add the classic MU logo to this sporty tee.
Both the logo and the eyeball on the hat required just black and white Cricut iron-on vinyl like this.
In some ways, we think this is one of the easiest of all Disney or Pixar costumes, because you do not need to get a specific character’s look to make it work. Like we said, be your own monster and just add a hat or shirt.
Anxiety from Inside Out 2 Costume
Anxiety really stole the show (and the console in Riley’s mind) in Inside Out 2. You can pull together her recognizable look with a few items and a lot of hairspray. Funny enough, this Anxiety costume is pretty low-stress.
Start with Anxiety’s funky orange and white striped top. Here is a turtleneck sweater with orange and white stripes. Or, you can opt for a short-sleeve variation if you want to stay cooler. This one has the high neck we see on Anxiety in the movie. And, here is an orange striped shirt in kids’ sizes.
We think that top is distinctive enough to carry the outfit, but you can add some cropped brown flared pants like these to really bring the look home. (And a cozy pair in youth sizes.)
Top-off your Anxiety costume by really teasing your hair and gathering it into a high ponytail. You can even add some Anxiety-inspired color to your hair by adding something like this. (Fair warning: we have not tested that particular temporary hair color. So—you know—do a patch test first!)
Incidentally, we have a series of Inside Out and Inside Out 2 movie night guides you can find here: (1) Inside Out Disney Movie Night: Emotion Sharing Guide (2) Inside Out Movie Night: Extended Reflection Guide (3) Disney Movie Night Discussion Guide: Inside Out 2 and finally (4) How to Connect with Family: Inside Out Movie Snack Activity. Those could be fun for some post-trick-or-treating cozy time.”

Comfy Princess Costume
Our kids do not need to wait for Halloween to dress like princesses; they like to add some royal sparkle to their outfits on a regular basis. In How To (Comfortably) Dress Like a Princess in Disneyland, we wrote about the princess outfits they wear to the Disney parks.

We like to avoid the stiff and scratchy princess dresses in favor of tutus, soft crowns and on-theme tees. You can read all about our comfy princess attire in that post, but in the meantime, here are some links to help you find your princess costume pieces:
- Most of our tiaras are homemade (see that princess post), but we did purchase a few of these precious lace crowns a few years ago. We love them, and they are still going strong after many days of dress-up both inside and outside the Disney parks.
- The favorite tutu in our house came from a charity shop, so I cannot give you a link for that exact one, but it looks a lot like this one. In fact, ours gets worn so often that I may purchase that one to have a spare on hand.
- We have also made our own distinctly Disney tutus with this pattern from Simplicity.
- Here is an example of a sweet princess tee in adult sizes to go with the tutu and crown. It is subtle, but unmistakably points to Rapunzel.
- Here is a Cinderella shirt for kids that mimics the top of Cinderella’s gown. Pair this with a sparkly blue tutu, and a princess will be ready to dance through a hot day at Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party or Oogie Boogie Bash. That product listing also has an Ariel tee, and here is a link to a listing with a four-pack of princess “dress” shirts for bigger kids.
- One of our kids prefers tees featuring the princesses’ animal companions like this one that comes in youth and adult sizes. Just find something fun that works for you. There are more choices out there than we can count!
Luca Costume, (or Alberto Costume) from Luca
Our family loves the movie Luca. (You guessed it: we have a movie night guide for it right here.)

To pull together an easy sea monster costume, pretend you are a sea monster hanging-out on land just like Luca and Alberto (and eventually Luca’s parents.) You will just need to wear regular land-human clothes, but you can hint that you are in the process of transitioning by adding some sea monster scales with temporary tattoos like these ones or like these ones.
We have not tested either one of these tattoo products yet, so be sure to check for skin sensitivity and do a patch test if you decide to get them. You could also create your own scale effect with two products we have already used and liked: body/face paint pens plus this scaly looking chunky body glitter.
If you also want to copy Luca’s land clothes, pair some shorts with a shirt like this one. Alberto wears shorts with a rope belt and a sleeveless white tee. (Extra points if you look nervous around water.)
Nick Wilde Costume from Zootopia
A new Zootopia movie is coming out later this fall, and we sure do like the first one! You can easily pull together a foxy Nick Wilde costume with a few items.
Nick wears a green button-up shirt that looks a lot like this one. Actually, Nick’s shirt does have a subtle palm leaf print on it, so you could also go for a shirt like this or just find something in your closet. In any case, combine the shirt with khaki pants and a navy striped tie, and you will have Nick’s classic outfit!
Now, Nick Wilde is a fox, so we suggest adding orange ears and a tail to this Zootopia costume. We have made several ear headbands by simply cutting felt triangles and hot-glueing them to a headband, and I have personally sewn various animal tails for our kids out of faux fur and fleece. But you should also be able to find options for ready-made fox ear and tail sets: here is one and here is a kid-sized option. Finally, finish this Nick Zootopia costume with a little black face paint on the tip of your nose to give yourself a fox snout.
